Pioneer of Multi-Media Hypertext & Global Web Science
Biographical Overview
Invented the Microcosm open hypermedia system in 1989 prior to the World Wide Web, pioneering hypermedia links that were stored in separate databases rather than embedded inside documents. Alongside Tim Berners-Lee, Dame Wendy Hall co-founded the global discipline of Web Science to study the architectural and social evolution of the decentralized Web.
"The Web is not just a technological artifact; it is an organic, evolving socio-technical ecosystem created by billions of human interactions."
— Wendy Hall
Historical Context & Impact
In 1989, Wendy Hall built Microcosm, a hypermedia network that didn't bake links directly into document code. Instead, links lived in a standalone database called a "linkbase", allowing users to click on any word, image, or video clip and dynamically generate links across thousands of files without editing the original files.
