Margaret Hamilton
Director of the MIT Software Engineering Division & Apollo Flight Software Architect
Biographical Overview
Led the MIT software division that engineered the on-board flight computer for the Apollo moon missions. Hamilton coined the term "software engineering" and created the priority-scheduling operating system that prevented an emergency abort during Apollo 11's lunar descent.
"There was no second chance. We all knew that."
— Margaret Hamilton
Historical Context & Impact
When a radar switch error flooded the Apollo 11 guidance computer with data during landing, Hamilton's priority-scheduling software recognized the CPU was overloaded and dropped low-priority radar routines to keep rocket control loops running. The famous photo of Hamilton standing next to a tower of paper is the complete printed Apollo Guidance Computer flight source code.
