Margaret Burnett
Distinguished Professor at Oregon State & Visual Programming / GenderMag Pioneer
Biographical Overview
ACM Fellow and Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at Oregon State University. Burnett pioneered visual programming languages, end-user software engineering for spreadsheets, and created GenderMag, the first systematic inspection method for detecting gender bias in software features.
"Software is not gender-neutral just because code has no gender. The cognitive styles assumed by designers create subtle barriers."
— Margaret Burnett
Historical Context & Impact
In 1971, Burnett was hired as the very first female software developer at Procter & Gamble. Decades later as a professor, she analyzed why female computer science students abandoned software tools more often than males and discovered that popular IDEs and software were designed exclusively for aggressive trial-and-error cognitive styles, inventing the GenderMag method to fix it.
